It is said that this famous tourist attraction in Rajasthan was built in the Epic Mahabharata times when Bhim one of the Pandavas created Bhimtal (a lake) within its folds. The Rajputs knew how to establish strategic vantage towers in their battlements which now help you to enjoy panoramic views of the surroundings of Chittor. A zigzag path runs for 1 km from the new part of Chittor to Ram Pol, the main entrance to the fort, holding monuments and ancient architecture that are a must see.

About Chittaurgarh Fort

The largest fort in India and Asia, Chittorgarh Fort has withstood three major Muslim invasions starting from Alauddin Khilji, Bahadur Shah and Akbar. But, never for once, seen as a Muslim bastion and always regarded as the hallmark of the Rajput amour propre. It wasn’t a fight for religion or faith; it was the fight to keep the pride of the land unsullied and protecting it from the foreign raiders. And it was this sense of belonging that made the Rajput kings take up arms against the enemies which defined their never say die heroism for generations to come. While the men braved it out in the battlefield, the women supported the sacrifice of their men by committing jauhar to keep the honour of the community and the unflinching, indomitable spirit alive.

VIJAY STAMBH

Vijay Stambh (the Tower of Victory) was built by Maharana Kumbha between 1440 AD and 1448 AD to immortalise his triumph of defeating the Muslim rulers of Malwa and Gujarat. Built partly from red sandstone and partly white marble, this architectural wonder is nine-storey tower decorated with detailed sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses. Narrow steps lead to the terrace where one can catch a spectacular view of the entire town from the balconies.

CHITTORGARH FORT

While it is difficult to arrive at the exact date the fort was established, legend has it that the construction of the Chittorgarh Fort was initiated by Bhim, a Pandava hero from the mythological epic Mahabharata. The fort houses several magnificent monuments, some unfortunately ravaged by time.

This palace plays an important role in Rajput history. The structure is built on the banks of a lotus pool and has a pavilion that provides privacy for the women of the royal family.
