Gwalior to Ujjain Trip: Overnight Trains & 2-Day Plan

UT By Ujjain Tours & Travels Editorial· Updated 2026-11-09·8 min read

Key takeaways

The easiest Gwalior to Ujjain trip is an overnight train. The 11126 Gwalior-Ratlam Express starts at Gwalior Junction at 19:50 and reaches Ujjain Junction at 05:02, while the 14310 Ujjaini Express leaves Gwalior at 18:50 and arrives at 03:55. Either way you sleep on the train and wake up in Ujjain, ready for Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga darshan the same morning.

All train times in this guide are as per erail on 2026-11-09; confirm on NTES (the National Train Enquiry System) or IRCTC before travel, because timings and running days do change. Where the listing sites disagree with each other, we say so instead of guessing. This page is a trip plan, not a booking table: it compares the practical trains from Gwalior, explains the road and bus option, and turns each arrival time into a two-day Ujjain plan. If you would rather have the Ujjain side handled for you, see our Ujjain pilgrimage tour package for how a guided darshan trip is put together.

Gwalior to Ujjain trip: quick plan

Gwalior and Ujjain are both in Madhya Pradesh, but they sit at opposite ends of the state, so the journey is a full night or a full day. The short version:

Gwalior to Ujjain trains compared

erail shows 17 trains between Gwalior (GWL) and Ujjain Junction (UJN), but only a handful leave Gwalior at a sensible hour, and the right Gwalior to Ujjain overnight train depends on your weekday. The table below lists the ones worth planning around. The times for 11126, 14310 and 12920 were matched on both erail and ConfirmTkt on 2026-11-09; the others come from erail alone.

Why the running days look confusing online

Aggregator pages often contradict themselves. One popular booking site marks 11126 as daily in one section and as a four-day train in another, and a rail listing site shows every train on this pair as daily. The 11126 originates at Gwalior, so its listed days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) are Gwalior departure days. The 14310 and 14318 are different: they start at Yog Nagari Rishikesh in the morning and reach Gwalior the same evening at 18:45, leaving at 18:50. Their listed days (Tuesday and Wednesday for 14310, Friday and Saturday for 14318) are origin days, and because Gwalior falls on day one of the run, the Gwalior departure should be the same day. That is our reading of the timetable, not a confirmed fact, so check the exact date on NTES before you book.

Which train suits which traveller

Families and older pilgrims usually do best on the 11126. Boarding at the starting station is calmer, and a 05:02 arrival is early but not punishing. Travellers who want the earliest possible darshan queue should look at 14310 or 14318, which reach Ujjain at 03:55 and halt there until 04:10. Anyone travelling on a Sunday finds none of these overnight trains listed, and if NTES does not confirm the 14310 or 14318 for your Wednesday or Saturday, the daily 12920 Malwa Express becomes the reliable choice. The Malwa Express runs between Dr. Ambedkar Nagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra as the 12919/12920 pair, so it is a long-distance train; book as early as you can.

The route: Shivpuri, Guna and Maksi

The 14310 does not run via Jhansi or Bhopal. After Gwalior it heads south-west through Shivpuri (20:23) and Guna (22:15), then crosses the Malwa plateau overnight to Maksi (03:05) before reaching Ujjain at 03:55. On the railmitra stop table Gwalior is 592 km from Rishikesh and Ujjain is 1,075 km, which puts the Gwalior-Ujjain rail leg at about 483 km. erail's fare table uses 482 km, while ConfirmTkt shows about 511 km, so treat the rail distance as roughly 480 to 510 km depending on the train's route. For the Gwalior to Ujjain distance by road, use the official 451 km figure below.

Gwalior to Ujjain by bus or road

If no train suits your dates, the road is the other option. The official Ujjain district page lists the road distance from Ujjain to Gwalior as 451 km and names Gwalior among the cities connected to Ujjain by regular buses, along with Indore, Bhopal, Ratlam, Kota and Omkareshwar. Operators, timings and fares change by season, so compare them on a bus-booking app a few days before you travel rather than relying on any printed schedule.

A 451 km road journey is a long day. If you drive yourself, plan to leave Gwalior early, take proper breaks, and aim to reach Ujjain before dark so the next morning is free for the temple. If you travel by overnight bus, keep the first Ujjain morning light: rest, bathe and do darshan later in the day rather than joining a queue straight off a sleeper bus.

You can read the district administration's own Ujjain district's how-to-reach page for the official air, rail and road summary.

Arrival time decides your first day

Your arrival time shapes the whole of day one. Use this table to match your train to a realistic first day in Ujjain.

We have deliberately left out temple opening hours: they vary by day and festival, so check the temple's official sources on the day. For a pre-dawn arrival, line up your local transport before you leave Gwalior. Ujjain Tours Travels is based in Ujjain and can arrange darshan-day transport and local tours once you arrive.

2-day Ujjain plan for an early-morning arrival

An Ujjain trip from Gwalior works well over 2 days. This plan assumes you arrive on the 11126 at 05:02 or the 14310/14318 at 03:55. If you come in on the Malwa Express, push day one's morning to the afternoon and swap the order. For a more detailed city plan you can also follow our Ujjain 2-day itinerary.

Day 1: Mahakaleshwar and the old city

Start with Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. According to the Ujjain district administration, Shri Mahakaleshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and its lingam is believed to be self-manifested (swayambhu) and south-facing. The temple is built on several levels: an Omkareshwar Shiva shrine sits above the main sanctum, and the Nagchandreshwar shrine on the third storey opens only on Nagpanchami. The temple's biggest crowds come with the Mahashivaratri fair, so avoid that week unless the festival is the reason for your trip. The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti has its own booking process, which we do not cover here.

After darshan, return to your room for a proper rest; you have had a short night on the train. In the afternoon visit Harsiddhi Temple and spend the evening at Ram Ghat on the Shipra River. Ujjain lies on the eastern bank of the Shipra and is one of the seven Sapta Puri pilgrimage cities, which is why the ghats are central to any visit.

Day 2: Kal Bhairav and the ghats

Begin with Kal Bhairav Temple at Bhairavgarh. Kal Bhairav is worshipped as the guardian deity of Ujjain, and the temple is known for its unusual tradition of devotees offering liquor to the deity. Spend the rest of the day on whichever old-city temples and ghats you missed on day one, then take your evening train or bus home. Ujjain also hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela every 12 years; on those dates crowds and transport change completely, so plan separately.

Add Omkareshwar or Indore

With a third day, the natural add-on is Omkareshwar Temple, the second Jyotirlinga in this part of Madhya Pradesh. It stands on Mandhata island in the Narmada River in Khandwa district, and the Ujjain district page lists Omkareshwar among the places with regular bus links to Ujjain. Pairing the two Jyotirlingas makes the long journey from Gwalior count for more.

Indore is another easy add-on. It is 53 km from Ujjain by road, and Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore, also 53 km away, is the nearest airport to Ujjain.

Planning the return to Gwalior

We have not published return timings here, because the reverse services need to be checked for your exact date. The Malwa Express runs in both directions as the 12919/12920 pair. Search Ujjain Junction (UJN) to Gwalior (GWL) on NTES or IRCTC for your travel date, and book both directions together once your Ujjain days are fixed. Coming from further north instead? Our Ujjain trip from Delhi by train guide covers the capital's options.
