Haridwar to Ujjain Trip: Direct Trains & 2-Day Plan

UT By Ujjain Tours & Travels Editorial· Updated 2026-11-09·7 min read

Key takeaways

A Haridwar to Ujjain trip has one direct rail corridor and two trains on it. The 14310 Ujjaini Express and the 14318 Yog Nagari Rishikesh-Lakshmibai Nagar Express both leave Haridwar Junction at 07:45 and reach Ujjain Junction at 03:55 the next morning, a journey of 20 h 10 min. You arrive before dawn, a short ride from Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.

All train times here are as per erail on 2026-11-09; confirm on NTES (the National Train Enquiry System) or IRCTC before travel. The booking sites that rank for this route contradict each other on running days, and one even shows zero trains, so this guide puts both direct services side by side, lists every halt that matters, and then turns a 03:55 arrival into a workable two-day Ujjain plan. If you prefer to have the Ujjain leg organised for you, our Ujjain pilgrimage tour package shows how a guided darshan trip is structured.

Haridwar to Ujjain trip: the quick plan

Is there a direct train from Haridwar to Ujjain? Yes, two, and they share the same timetable on different days. Here is the short version:

Haridwar to Ujjain trains: 14310 and 14318

Timings and running days

Both trains start at Yog Nagari Rishikesh and end at Lakshmibai Nagar in Indore, passing Ujjain on the way. erail lists them with identical times between Haridwar and Ujjain. ConfirmTkt independently shows the 14310 at 07:45 from Haridwar and 03:55 into Ujjain on Tuesday and Wednesday, at about 1,051 km. The Friday and Saturday days for 14318 come from erail only.

As per erail on 2026-11-09; confirm on NTES before travel. Some aggregators mark these trains as daily; they are not on erail's listing.

Haridwar Junction (station code HW) is on Northern Railway's Moradabad division. Ujjain Junction (UJN) is on Western Railway's Ratlam division. Third-party timetables for this route drift out of sync, so NTES is the source to trust for your date.

Which weekday to leave Haridwar

Because the trains run only four days a week between them, the weekday you leave Haridwar decides which days you spend in Ujjain. The listed days are the days the train leaves its origin, Yog Nagari Rishikesh, early in the morning; Haridwar comes 90 minutes later on the same day.

If your dates are flexible, pick the departure that leaves you a full second day in Ujjain before your return train.

Boarding at Rishikesh or joining en route

If you are staying in Rishikesh rather than Haridwar, the Rishikesh to Ujjain train is the same service: board at Yog Nagari Rishikesh, where the 14310 starts at 06:15, 23 km before Haridwar. Pilgrims coming from other cities can join the same train at its main halts. The table shows the 14310 schedule from the erail and railmitra stop lists (matched on 2026-11-09); erail confirms the same Haridwar, Gwalior and Ujjain times for the 14318.

Read as a journey, the timetable splits neatly into two halves. The first is a daytime run across the plains: Saharanpur by mid-morning, Meerut City before noon, Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi at lunchtime, then Mathura and Agra Cantt in the afternoon. The second is the night leg: Gwalior at dusk, Shivpuri and Guna in the late evening, and a long overnight stretch to Maksi at 03:05. That shape matters for packing. Carry enough food and water for the day, keep a light layer for the night section, and set an alarm for about 03:00 so you are awake before Maksi rather than scrambling at Ujjain.

The train halts at Ujjain for 15 minutes, from 03:55 to 04:10, before running on to Dewas and Indore, so have your bags ready from Maksi onwards. Travellers from Delhi have other options as well; our Ujjain trip from Delhi by train guide covers them.

Arriving at 03:55: the first hours in Ujjain

What do you do after a pre-dawn arrival? Very little, for the first hour or two. The simplest plan is to wait at the station until first light, freshen up, and then move. Pilgrims who want to be early in the Mahakaleshwar darshan queue can head to the temple area as the city wakes up; those who have slept badly on the train should go to their room first and rest.

Three practical steps make a 03:55 arrival easy:

Ujjain lies on the eastern bank of the Shipra River. A walk to Ram Ghat at sunrise is a gentle first outing if you cannot check in yet.

2-day Ujjain itinerary for Haridwar pilgrims

This plan assumes the 03:55 arrival and an evening departure on day two. For a longer, more detailed city plan, see our Ujjain 2-day itinerary.

Day 1: Mahakaleshwar and the old-city temples

Begin at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. The Ujjain district administration describes Shri Mahakaleshwar as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, with a lingam believed to be self-manifested (swayambhu) and facing south. The temple rises in levels: an Omkareshwar Shiva shrine sits above the main sanctum, and the Nagchandreshwar shrine on the third storey opens only on Nagpanchami. Mahashivaratri brings a large fair and the heaviest crowds of the year. The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti has its own booking process, which this guide does not cover.

After darshan, rest through the middle of the day. In the afternoon visit Harsiddhi Temple, then spend the evening at Ram Ghat on the Shipra. Temple timings change with the day and the festival calendar, so check the temple's official sources rather than any fixed timetable.

Day 2: Kal Bhairav and the Shipra ghats

Start the second morning at Kal Bhairav Temple in Bhairavgarh. Kal Bhairav is revered as the guardian deity of Ujjain, and devotees here offer liquor to the deity. Return through the old city, revisit the ghats, and keep the evening free for your onward train or road journey.

From one Kumbh city to another

Haridwar and Ujjain are both Kumbh cities, something few city pairs share. The Kumbh Mela rotates between four primary locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik-Trimbakeshwar and Ujjain. In Ujjain the gathering is known as the Simhastha and takes place every 12 years. Ujjain is also one of the seven Sapta Puri pilgrimage cities, which makes a Haridwar-to-Ujjain journey a natural pilgrimage pairing.

During a Kumbh or Simhastha period, crowds, trains and local transport change completely. If your dates overlap with one, plan that trip separately and check official notices before you travel.

Adding Omkareshwar and planning the journey home

With one more day you can add Omkareshwar Temple, another of the twelve Jyotirlingas, on Mandhata island in the Narmada in Khandwa district. The Ujjain district page lists Omkareshwar among the places connected to Ujjain by regular buses. Our Ujjain to Omkareshwar one-day trip guide explains how to fit it in.

How do you get back to Haridwar? The 14310 and 14318 have return services on the same corridor, but we have not been able to verify their timings and running days from a primary listing, so we do not publish them here. Search Ujjain Junction (UJN) to Haridwar (HW) on NTES or IRCTC for your date and book the return at the same time as the outward journey. Indore is 53 km from Ujjain, and Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore, also 53 km away, is the nearest airport if you choose to travel home another way. For the official air, rail and road summary, see the Ujjain district Mahakaleshwar page.
