Kota to Ujjain Trip: Trains via Nagda & 2-Day Plan (2026)

UT By Ujjain Tours & Travels Editorial· Updated 2026-10-28·9 min read

Key takeaways

A Kota to Ujjain trip needs no change of train at Nagda. The daily 12416 New Delhi–Indore Express leaves Kota Junction at 03:30 and reaches Ujjain Junction at 08:20; the Ranthambore Express leaves at 14:20 and arrives 19:15; and the unreserved Kota–Ujjain MEMU runs 05:40 to 12:00 (all as of October 2026 — confirm on NTES). Two days with the 18:30 return train is enough for Mahakaleshwar and the main circuit.

Kota sits on the New Delhi–Mumbai main line and Ujjain sits off it, beyond Nagda Junction, which is why aggregator pages make the route look like it needs a connection. It does not: the Delhi–Indore and Jaipur–Indore expresses branch off at Nagda and run straight into Ujjain.

Kota to Ujjain trip at a glance

By rail Kota to Ujjain is about 280 km — the MEMU schedule puts Ujjain at the 280 km mark — and the fastest expresses cover it in a little over four hours. By road it is roughly 250–265 km via Jhalawar and Agar, about five to six hours; distance sites disagree (222 to 279 km depending on what they measure), so check a map before driving. The train wins on every count: cheaper, no night driving, and the 08:20 arrival gives you the whole day in Ujjain.

If you want the Ujjain end arranged before you board — a car at Ujjain Junction at 08:20, the temple circuit sequenced so you do not cross town twice, and a drop in time for the 18:30 train — our Ujjain trip plans from your city page lists the railway station transfer, city temple circuits and customised multi-day pilgrimage packages we run, with 24/7 pilgrimage support on +91 99263 12626 (call or WhatsApp). The itinerary below is the same one we use for Kota families.

Kota to Ujjain trains: all through, no change at Nagda

Four departures that cover the whole day

Times below are from the confirmtkt schedule pages for each train, read on 28 October 2026. Kota Junction is West Central Railway's Kota division headquarters; Nagda and Ujjain are on Western Railway's Ratlam division. The zone change is invisible to passengers; the same train runs through.

All timings as of October 2026; confirm running days and live status on NTES live train status before you leave for the station. RailMitra's Kota–Ujjain list shows a dozen-plus other through trains — mostly Delhi- and Jaipur-to-Indore expresses and south-bound trains such as 22942, 12968, 12970 and 12976 — but it gives no Kota departure times and marks everything "daily", which is unreliable, so we have kept the table to the four trains whose full schedules we opened.

Pick by what you want from the first morning. The 12416 (New Delhi 21:50, Kota 03:20/03:30, Nagda 07:10/07:25, Ujjain 08:20) is the family train: 03:30 is an early start, but you arrive at a sensible hour, check in first and reach the temple fresh. The 12974 (Jaipur 21:00, Kota 00:35, Nagda 03:35/03:50, Ujjain 04:40) suits pilgrims holding a pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti slot — the booking is a separate process handled on our sister site bhasmaartibooking.com — but it runs on select days, so check. The Ranthambore Express (12466, Bhagat Ki Kothi–Indore, Jaipur 10:02, Kota 14:10/14:20, Nagda 18:10/18:25, Ujjain 19:15) is the afternoon option if you cannot leave before lunch; you arrive in time for dinner and start the circuit on day 2.

The Kota–Ujjain MEMU: halts and who it suits

The 61624 MEMU is the budget option and the only train on this list that is purely Kota–Ujjain. It leaves Kota at 05:40 and halts at Ramganj Mandi at 07:05 (72 km), Bhawani Mandi at 07:33 (100 km), Shamgarh at 08:05 (133 km) and Nagda Junction at 10:30, departing 10:40 (225 km), before reaching Ujjain at 12:00 (280 km). It is unreserved: buy a general ticket at the counter and board — no IRCTC booking, no waitlist, which is why Kota's coaching students use it for a Sunday darshan. The trade-offs are general seating, a 6 h 20 min run and a noon arrival that leaves only an afternoon and evening on day 1. For Hadoti-region pilgrims boarding at Ramganj Mandi or Bhawani Mandi it is the obvious train.

Why trains sit at Nagda

Every schedule above shows a 10–15 minute halt at Nagda Junction (12416: 07:10 to 07:25; 12466: 18:10 to 18:25; MEMU: 10:30 to 10:40). Nagda is where the Ujjain–Indore line leaves the Delhi–Mumbai main line, and Wikipedia records that the Ranthambore Express reverses direction there (and again at Sawai Madhopur). The halt is scheduled, not a delay; stay on the train.

Return: Ujjain to Kota trains

The return is simpler: one train does the job for almost everyone.

12415 at 18:30, Kota at 22:50

The 12415 leaves Indore at 17:10, arrives Ujjain at 18:25 and departs 18:30, halts at Nagda 19:40–19:55 and reaches Kota Junction at 22:50 (departing 23:00 for New Delhi at 06:20). That gives you the whole of day 2 in Ujjain until about 17:30 and gets you home before midnight — the right return for families and for anyone with work or coaching on Monday. Book it the same time you book the outbound; it is the Delhi train, so seats go early.

MEMU and other options

The 61623 MEMU runs daily and takes 6 h 35 min, but the list page we checked did not show its times, so look it up on NTES. The 12967 Chennai–Jaipur Superfast passes Ujjain at 21:25 and reaches Kota at 02:25 on days it runs (the schedule page is inconsistent on days — check); it is a usable late option if you want the full evening at Ram Ghat. The 12465 Ranthambore and 12973 Jaipur Superfast run the reverse of the outbound trains, but we could not verify their Ujjain and Kota times, so treat them as "check" rather than plan around them. Fares for every train are on IRCTC and change by class and date, so we do not quote them.

The 2-day Kota to Ujjain trip plan

Built on the 12416's 08:20 arrival and the 12415's 18:30 departure the next day — one hotel night. Ujjain Junction is about 2 km from the Mahakaleshwar temple, with autos at the station. The temple opens before dawn and timings shift with festivals, so check the official Shri Mahakaleshwar site for the day's darshan and aarti schedule; we do not print clock times for the temple.

Day 1: check in, Mahakaleshwar and Mahakal Lok, Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat

An 08:20 arrival is late for the pre-dawn aarti but ideal for a check-in-first day: drop the bags, bathe, and reach the Jyotirlinga before the midday crush. Mahakal Lok is beside the temple, so walk it straight after darshan. Harsiddhi Temple is close enough to do on foot after lunch. Finish at Ram Ghat for the evening aarti on the Shipra. Hotels around the temple are the natural base; our sister site hotelsinujjain.in covers names and rates, so we leave that to it.

Day 2: Kaal Bhairav, Mangalnath, Sandipani, Vedh Shala, then the train

The second day is the outer circuit — Kaal Bhairav Mandir, Mangalnath, Sandipani Ashram and Vedh Shala are spread around town, so hire a car or fix an auto for the morning (route and fare guides are on ujjaintourandtravel.com). Be back at the hotel by 16:30, collect bags and be at the station by 18:00. If you prefer a slower second day, drop Vedh Shala and keep the 18:30 train.

Budget variant on the MEMU

Take the 05:40 MEMU out (Ujjain 12:00), do Mahakaleshwar, Mahakal Lok and Harsiddhi in the afternoon and Ram Ghat in the evening, stay one night, do the outer circuit on day 2 and return on the 18:30 12415 (reserved) or the MEMU (check its time on NTES). No advance booking is needed for the outbound leg, which is what makes this work for students deciding on a Saturday.

Road and bus from Kota (hedged)

Driving via Jhalawar and Agar

The road route runs south through Jhalawar and then Agar to Ujjain. We could not verify a single distance: one calculator we opened showed 222 km in its header, 226 km aerial and 262.6 km driving, while a route snippet quoted 250 km and 5 hours via NH-52. Plan on roughly 250–265 km and five to six hours, check a current map, and avoid the unlit stretches at night. Driving makes sense only for a group that wants to add Omkareshwar on the way back; otherwise the 12416 is faster door to door once rest stops are counted.

Buses: data unavailable — how to check

Bus timetables and fares for Kota–Ujjain were not available on the sources we could open, so we do not list any. Check RSRTC for state services and redBus or the operator for private sleepers; if nothing is direct, the Jhalawar connection is the usual workaround. With four through trains, a bus is rarely the better choice here.

Tips for Kota travellers

Coming from further up the line? The Jaipur to Ujjain trip uses the 12974 and 12968 with Kota as the halfway halt, and the Ujjain trip from Delhi by train rides the same 12416 from New Delhi. The general 2-day Ujjain itinerary has the temple circuit in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct train from Kota to Ujjain?

Yes, several. The 12416 New Delhi–Indore Express (Kota 03:30, Ujjain 08:20) and the 12466 Ranthambore Express (14:20, 19:15) run daily; the 12974 Jaipur–Indore Superfast (00:35, 04:40) runs on select days; and the 61624 Kota–Ujjain MEMU (05:40, 12:00) runs daily unreserved. None requires a change at Nagda. Times as of October 2026 — confirm on NTES.

How long does Kota to Ujjain take by train?

Between 4 h 05 min (12974) and 4 h 55 min (Ranthambore Express) on the expresses, and 6 h 20 min on the MEMU, for about 280 rail km. Each train halts 10–15 minutes at Nagda Junction, which is already included in those times.

What is the distance from Kota to Ujjain?

About 280 km by rail (the MEMU schedule shows Ujjain at 280 km). By road it is roughly 250–265 km via Jhalawar and Agar, about five to six hours; calculators disagree, so check a map before driving.

Which train from Kota reaches Ujjain in the morning?

The daily 12416 New Delhi–Indore Express leaves Kota Junction at 03:30 and reaches Ujjain at 08:20 — the best fit for a check-in-first day. The 12974 reaches Ujjain at 04:40 but runs on select days. Confirm both on NTES.

How many days are enough for Ujjain from Kota?

Two. Arrive 08:20 on the 12416, cover Mahakaleshwar, Mahakal Lok, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat on day 1, the Kaal Bhairav–Mangalnath–Sandipani–Vedh Shala circuit on day 2, and leave on the 18:30 12415 to reach Kota at 22:50. Add a third day only for Omkareshwar.
