Pune to Ujjain Road Trip: Route, Stops & 2-Day Drive

A Pune to Ujjain road trip covers roughly 650–700 km and takes about 12–14 hours of driving, so plan it as two days: Pune to Nashik and on to Dhule on NH60, then NH52 through Sendhwa, across the Narmada at Khalghat and into Indore, with the last 55 km to Ujjain. Break the night in Nashik, Dhule or Indore.

This guide is written for families driving their own car or hiring a cab for a Mahakal pilgrimage. It gives the main route with distances between towns, two alternatives (via Shirdi and via Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), where to stop overnight, the ghat sections and night-driving stretches to respect, and how to time your arrival for darshan at Mahakaleshwar. Distances and times below are approximate as of 2026 and change with roadworks, so check your navigation app on the day.

The main route: Pune – Nashik – Dhule – Indore – Ujjain

This is the route most navigation apps pick and the one we recommend for a first drive. It is highway almost all the way and passes through towns with good food and fuel.

Adding those up gives roughly 690 km. On a clear day with an early start, a fit driver can do Pune to Indore in one long day, but we don't recommend doing Pune to Ujjain in a single stretch with family on board.

The ghat sections to respect

Two stretches deserve daylight and patience. The first is the hilly section on NH52 around the Sendhwa side of the border, where the highway climbs through the Satpura foothills. The second is the descent to the Narmada at Khalghat and the climb back up towards Indore, a stretch with a long history of truck breakdowns and accidents. Neither is difficult in a car at normal speed, but overtaking slow trucks on curves is where trouble happens. Plan your timings so you cross these in daylight.

Two alternative routes and when to use them

The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar route follows NH52 further south and crosses the Kannad (Autram) ghat, which is slower. It only makes sense if you want Grishneshwar or Ellora on the way. The Shirdi route is popular with Pune families because it turns the drive into a two-temple pilgrimage without adding much distance.

Where to stop overnight

Where you sleep decides whether the trip is relaxed or punishing. Three sensible plans:

For most families the Dhule halt is the best balance. You leave Dhule after breakfast, cross the Sendhwa and Khalghat ghats before lunch, reach Indore by mid-afternoon and Ujjain by early evening — in time for the Sandhya Aarti or an evening at Ram Ghat on the Shipra.

Timing your arrival for Mahakal darshan

Driving lets you plan around the temple day at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga rather than around a train timetable. A few rules we give every road-trip family:

• Arrive the evening before any Bhasma Aarti slot. The aarti starts around 4 am and needs a prior booking; you want a full night's sleep near the temple, not a 3 am drive from Indore.
• Park once, then walk or take an e-rickshaw. Roads around the temple and the Mahakal Lok corridor are restricted and congested; use your hotel's parking or an official parking area.
• Avoid arriving on Sawan Mondays and Mahashivratri without a plan. Traffic diversions around Ujjain can add an hour or more on those days.
• Use the drive day for the ghats and the lighter temples. Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat and Kal Bhairav work well on arrival evening; save the main darshan for a fresh morning.

Once you're in Ujjain, a 2-day Ujjain itinerary covers the temples in a sensible order, and the Ujjain–Omkareshwar–Maheshwar circuit is easy to add because you already have the car.

Food and break stops on the way

The Pune–Ujjain drive passes through three distinct food regions, and planning meals around them makes the long hours easier. Maharashtra's stretch to Nashik is dotted with misal and vada pav stops around Sangamner, and Nashik itself has plenty of family restaurants if you are halting there. Between Malegaon and Dhule the highway dhabas are busy with truckers, which usually means fresh, fast food; choose the crowded ones. Once you cross into Madhya Pradesh, Indore is the food capital of the route — Sarafa Bazaar at night and Chappan Dukan by day are worth a short stop if you are overnighting there, and poha-jalebi is the default breakfast from Indore to Ujjain.

What a Pune to Ujjain road trip costs

We don't quote fuel or toll figures because both change often, but the cost of the trip is driven by a few predictable things. Fuel is the largest item: a round trip of roughly 1,400 km in a petrol hatchback costs far less than in a diesel SUV, so calculate using your own car's real-world mileage and the current pump price. Tolls come next — there are several plazas on NH60 and NH52, and the total depends on your vehicle class, so check a toll calculator before leaving. Then add one or two hotel nights on the road, two or three nights in Ujjain, meals, and parking near the temple. For a group of four or more, hiring a cab with a driver for the whole trip often costs about the same as driving yourself once you count fuel, tolls and driver fatigue, and it lets everyone rest. Car, fuel and safety checklist

• FASTag: recharge before leaving; several toll plazas on NH60 and NH52 are FASTag-only lanes in practice.
• Documents: driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate — interstate checks at the Maharashtra–MP border are routine.
• Fuel: fuel is easy to find on this route; top up in Nashik/Dhule and in Indore rather than waiting for the ghat sections.
• Night driving: avoid the Sendhwa–Khalghat–Indore stretch after dark if you can; truck density is highest at night.
• Heat: April–June afternoons in Malwa and Khandesh are very hot; carry water and plan long breaks at midday.
• Monsoon: July–September brings fog and slippery ghat roads; leave extra buffer and drive slower.

Before you set off, check any planned closures or diversions announced by the National Highways Authority of India, and keep your navigation app on live traffic.
