Ujjain Temple Pilgrimage Itinerary: Temples in Order

UT By Ujjain Tours & Travels Editorial· Updated 2026-10-01·9 min read

Key takeaways

To plan a Ujjain temple pilgrimage itinerary, sequence the temples by three anchors: Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga first (Bhasma Aarti at dawn with a permit, otherwise early darshan), the walkable core (Harsiddhi Temple, Ram Ghat, Bada Ganesh, Mahakal Lok), then the northern pair Kal Bhairav Temple and Mangalnath by auto or taxi. Hours below are indicative; two days covers everything without rushing.

Most itineraries, including our own two- and three-day plans, list temples by day. What they leave out is the logic underneath: which temple closes at midday, which two are next to each other on foot, which pair sits several kilometres away on the Shipra River and must be driven to. This page is that logic. Use it to build a one-, two- or three-day plan of your own, or to check that the plan you already have will not leave you outside a closed gate at 1 pm.

How to plan a Ujjain temple pilgrimage itinerary: three rules

Anchor the day on Mahakaleshwar

Every Ujjain day starts with Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, the south-facing Dakshinamurti lingam that Wikipedia describes. The temple runs roughly 4 am to 11 pm, with Bhasma Aarti about 4-6 am for permit holders and the last aarti before closing; the full aarti-by-aarti timetable and darshan-ticket details are published on the official Shri Mahakaleshwar temple website, which you should confirm before fixing your order. If you have a Bhasma Aarti permit, budget about two hours including the queue; if not, the earliest general darshan is the next best anchor, and the queue can run anywhere from 45 minutes to three hours depending on the day.

Walk the core, drive the north

Around Mahakaleshwar is a cluster you can cover on foot: Harsiddhi Temple is about 700 m and an 8-10 minute walk away, Ram Ghat another 500 m and 6-8 minutes beyond Harsiddhi, with Bada Ganesh Temple and the Mahakal Lok corridor adjoining the main temple. The northern cluster is a different matter. Kal Bhairav Temple sits in Bhairavgarh on the bank of the Shipra River, about 4-8 km by road depending on source and route, a 15-20 minute drive, from Mahakaleshwar, and Mangalnath Temple, Sandipani Ashram, Gadkalika Temple and the Bhartrihari Caves are grouped near it. Walk the core; take an auto or taxi north and do the whole cluster in one loop. If you would rather have a driver who knows the darshan timings do the sequencing for you, plan your Ujjain trip with our guided temple tour or taxi and the order below is what we follow.

Check hours before you fix the order

The most common mistake is arriving at Harsiddhi Temple in the early afternoon. Our sister page lists it as open in the morning until noon and again from 4 pm to 9 pm, while another local guide lists a continuous 5 am-9 pm; the safe assumption is a midday break. Mangalnath Temple runs from sunrise, about 6 am, to about 9 pm, but its Bhat puja slots vary, and Chintaman Ganesh Temple keeps similar daylight hours. Only Mahakaleshwar has a firm published timetable; everything else in the table below is a range from local guides that you should confirm on the day.

Ujjain temple opening hours and time budgets (master table)

Hours are indicative and taken from local guide pages that do not always agree; where they conflict the table shows the range. Time budgets are our planning allowances for a normal day, not measured queue times, and they exclude the walk or drive between sites.

Two entries deserve a sentence more. Kal Bhairav Temple is the guardian deity of Ujjain and is known for the tradition of offering liquor, which Wikipedia records. Sandipani Ashram sits between the core and Mangalnath, which is why the recommended order threads it into the northern loop rather than treating it as a detour.

Core: Mahakaleshwar, Bada Ganesh, Harsiddhi, Mahakal Lok, Ram Ghat

Start at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga because it opens earliest and its queue is the one that grows through the morning. Step out to Bada Ganesh Temple, which is beside the complex and takes minutes. Walk the 700 m to Harsiddhi Temple while it is still morning, so you are inside before any midday break. Come back through the Mahakal Lok corridor when the light is better and the queue is behind you. Leave Ram Ghat for the evening: it is 500 m past Harsiddhi and its evening aarti is the natural end to the day, so there is no reason to visit it at noon and again at dusk.

North: Kal Bhairav, Gadkalika, Bhartrihari, Sandipani, Mangalnath

Take an auto or taxi for the northern cluster and do it as one loop. Sandipani Ashram is about 2-4 km (sources differ) and a 12-15 minute drive from the core, Mangalnath Temple about 3 km and 10 minutes beyond it, and Kal Bhairav Temple about 4-8 km from Mahakaleshwar depending on source and route, on the Shipra River bank in Bhairavgarh. Gadkalika Temple and the Bhartrihari Caves are in the same area. The order inside the loop matters less than doing it in one go; the hour matters more, because Kal Bhairav Temple is listed by local guides as closing around 7 pm, earlier than the others, so put it before Mangalnath if you are running late in the afternoon.

South/outer: Chintaman Ganesh, ISKCON

Chintaman Ganesh Temple and ISKCON Ujjain sit outside both clusters and need their own drive. Our sources do not publish a distance from the core, so allow an auto ride each way. They fit best as the last stop of a second day or the first stop of a third; on a one-day visit they are the first to drop.

Distances between temple clusters

Figures are approximate, from our portfolio's half-day circuit guide and Wikipedia, and assume normal traffic. Walking times are for an adult at pilgrim pace with stops for shoes and prasad.

Fitting the order into 1, 2 or 3 days

The matrix shows which temples survive as the trip gets shorter. It is an allocation, not an hour-by-hour plan; for clock times use our Ujjain 2-day itinerary (it groups the northern temples differently; this page explains the sequencing logic either plan should respect).

One day: what to drop

With one day, keep the core and the two northern temples that matter most, Kal Bhairav Temple and Mangalnath Temple, and drop the south cluster and the minor northern sites. Do the core in the morning, drive north after lunch, and be back at Ram Ghat for the evening aarti.

Two days: the comfortable split

Two days is the length we recommend. Day 1 is the core at an unhurried pace with a proper Mahakal Lok walk; Day 2 is the full northern loop in the morning and Chintaman Ganesh Temple in the afternoon. Nothing is dropped and nothing is rushed.

Three days: add Omkareshwar or slow Ujjain

A third day either goes out of town, most often to Omkareshwar, or stays in Ujjain to repeat Mahakaleshwar with a Bhasma Aarti permit that you could not get on day 1, and to fit ISKCON Ujjain and a slower Chintaman Ganesh visit. Our three-day itinerary on this site uses the Omkareshwar version.

Moving between temples: walk, auto or taxi

The core is a walking cluster and a vehicle adds little there. The northern loop and the south cluster are where a vehicle helps: an auto works for a small group that does not mind negotiating each leg, while a taxi for the day suits families, elderly pilgrims and anyone arriving from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore, which is about 57-58 km away, or from Ujjain Junction, about 2 km from the temple. Ujjain Tours Travels runs guided temple tours and day taxis with drivers who know the darshan timings and follow the order on this page; call or WhatsApp +91 99263 12626 to arrange one. We do not quote fares here because they vary by vehicle and season.

When the order changes: festivals and crowds

The order above assumes an ordinary day. On Sawan Mondays, at Mahashivratri, which Wikipedia notes brings a fair to Mahakaleshwar, and during Kartik, the Mahakaleshwar queue stretches and the core cluster becomes the whole morning; move the northern loop to the afternoon and accept that Chintaman Ganesh Temple may not fit. Ujjain also hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela every 12 years, and preparation works for the next one can divert traffic around the riverfront, so check locally for road closures near Ram Ghat and the Shipra River before you plan the evening. For first-visit practicalities such as shoes, phones and dress, see our Ujjain first-time travel tips.

Frequently asked questions

Which temple should I visit first in Ujjain?

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. It opens earliest, around 4 am with Bhasma Aarti for permit holders, and its queue grows through the morning, so anchoring the day on it keeps every other temple reachable.

What are the Ujjain temple timings?

Mahakaleshwar runs about 4 am to 11 pm on a published timetable. Harsiddhi is listed as morning until noon and 4-9 pm, Mangalnath and Chintaman Ganesh about 6 am-9 pm, Kal Bhairav roughly 5 am-7 pm per local guides. Hours conflict between sources, so confirm locally and on the official Mahakaleshwar site.

How many days are needed for all Ujjain temples?

Two days covers the core, the northern loop and Chintaman Ganesh without rushing. One day works if you drop the south cluster and the minor northern sites; a third day adds Omkareshwar or a slower repeat of Mahakaleshwar.

How far is Kal Bhairav from Mahakaleshwar?

About 4-8 km by road depending on source and route, a 15-20 minute drive, in Bhairavgarh on the Shipra River bank. It is not walkable from the core cluster, so take an auto or taxi and combine it with Mangalnath, Sandipani and Gadkalika.

Does Harsiddhi Temple close in the afternoon?

One local source lists it as open in the morning until noon and again from 4 pm to 9 pm; another lists 5 am-9 pm continuously. Plan for a midday break and visit it in the morning right after Mahakaleshwar.

Can I do the Ujjain temple circuit by auto?

Yes. The core cluster is on foot, and an auto covers the northern loop and Chintaman Ganesh. A day taxi is easier for families or anyone coming from Indore airport, about 57-58 km away.
