Vadodara to Ujjain Trip: Trains, Boarding Tips & 2-Day Plan

UT By Ujjain Tours & Travels Editorial· Updated 2026-10-28·9 min read

Key takeaways

The easiest Vadodara to Ujjain trip is an overnight train. The 12961 Avantika Express leaves Vadodara Junction at 02:12 and reaches Ujjain Junction at 07:30; the 19309 Shanti Express leaves Chhayapuri at 21:22 and arrives at 03:45 (both daily as of October 2026 — confirm on NTES). Give Mahakaleshwar two days and come back on the 18:55 Avantika or the 00:20 Shanti.

What the timetable sites skip: five of the nine trains listed from "Vadodara" actually leave from Chhayapuri, a satellite station about 6 km from Vadodara Junction. Check the station code on your ticket before you book a late-night auto.

Vadodara to Ujjain trip at a glance

By rail the distance is 358 km — the 12961 schedule shows Vadodara at the 392 km mark and Ujjain at 750 km. By road it is roughly 300 km via the Godhra–Dahod–Ratlam side; route planners disagree (281 to 298 km), so check a map before you drive. Trains take about five to six and a half hours, which suits the overnight slot: board after dinner or after midnight, wake up in Ujjain.

If you would rather have the Ujjain end handled — a car waiting at Ujjain Junction at 07:30, the temple circuit sequenced so you are not doubling back, and a drop in time for the 18:55 train — our Ujjain trip plans from your city page lists the railway station transfer, city temple circuits and customised multi-day pilgrimage packages we run, with 24/7 pilgrimage support on +91 99263 12626 (call or WhatsApp). The same plan works whether you arrive from Pune or from Vadodara.

Vadodara to Ujjain trains: Vadodara Junction or Chhayapuri?

What Chhayapuri is and why it matters at night

Chhayapuri (station code CYI) is a satellite station of Vadodara near Chhani Toll Naka, about 6 km from Vadodara Junction. Western Railway's Vadodara division opened it on 14 December 2019 to ease congestion at the main station, and several express and superfast trains on the New Delhi–Mumbai main line now halt there instead of at Vadodara Junction. For a Vadodara to Ujjain train this matters because the Shanti Express — the most convenient evening departure — stops at Chhayapuri, not at Vadodara Junction. Allow extra time for the ride out at night, and do not assume the station is walkable from the city centre.

Overnight options table

Times below are from the railmitra schedule pages for 12961 and 19309 (daily) and an EaseMyTrip timetable snapshot for the rest, all read on 28 October 2026. The snapshot does not show running days, so treat everything except Avantika and Shanti as "check running days" on NTES or IRCTC before booking.

Three daytime trains also appear on the same snapshot — 19053 at 09:32 (arrives 16:05), 19489 from Chhayapuri at 10:48 (17:10) and 11463 from Chhayapuri at 20:26 (02:30) — but they either waste the day or land you at 02:30, so they are not in the plan below. All timings are as of October 2026; confirm on NTES before you leave home.

Avantika vs Shanti: arriving at 07:30 or at 03:45

The Avantika Express (Mumbai Central–Indore, Western Railway, LHB coaches since 2019, classes 1A/2A/3A/3E/SL/GS, no pantry car) reaches Vadodara Junction at 02:02 and leaves at 02:12, then runs via Godhra (03:11), Dahod (04:01), Ratlam Junction (05:50) and Nagda Junction (06:38) to Ujjain Junction at 07:30. The timing is the point: you check in, bathe and are inside the Mahakaleshwar complex by mid-morning without losing a night. The catch is the 02:12 departure — you leave home around 01:00. Carry breakfast; there is no pantry.

The Shanti Express comes from the Ahmedabad/Gandhinagar side (railmitra lists Ahmedabad Junction as origin; Wikipedia says Gandhinagar Capital — confirm on NTES), picks up at Chhayapuri at 21:22 and reaches Ujjain at 03:45, with Ratlam at 01:35 and Nagda at 02:45 on the way. The departure hour is comfortable; the arrival hour is not. At 03:45 most hotels will not have a room ready, so either book the previous night so you can check in on arrival, or plan to go straight from the station to the temple area and freshen up later. The one group that benefits from a 03:45 arrival is pilgrims holding a pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti slot (booking is a separate process and is covered by our sister site bhasmaartibooking.com).

Return trains from Ujjain to Vadodara

Both overnight trains run back daily, and they mirror the outbound choice: a late-evening departure that lands at Vadodara Junction after midnight, or a midnight departure that lands at Chhayapuri at dawn.

12962 Avantika: 18:55 to Vadodara Junction at 00:30

The 12962 leaves Indore at 17:45, arrives Ujjain 18:50 and departs 18:55, then Nagda 19:48, Ratlam 20:30, Dahod 22:10, Godhra 23:35 and Vadodara Junction at 00:30 (departing 00:38 for Surat and Mumbai Central). This gives you a full second day in Ujjain until about 18:00. Book the pickup at Vadodara Junction before you leave — at 00:30 the prepaid auto queue is thin and app cabs take time.

19310 Shanti: 00:20 to Chhayapuri at 06:12

The 19310 leaves Indore at 23:00, reaches Ujjain at 00:15 and departs 00:20, then Nagda 01:14, Ratlam 02:05, Dahod 03:44, Godhra 05:15 and Chhayapuri at 06:07, departing 06:12 for Ahmedabad at 08:20. You sleep on the train and skip the second hotel night entirely — the cheapest way to do the trip — but you reach Chhayapuri, 6 km out, at dawn, so arrange your own ride home.

Getting home after a midnight arrival

Vadodara Junction at 00:30 has prepaid autos and cabs but expect a wait; a family member on the phone or a pre-booked cab is simpler. Chhayapuri at 06:12 is quieter and further out; ask the cab to come to the Chhani Toll Naka side. Both stations are easy in daylight; neither is where you want to be stranded with elders at 1 a.m. without a plan.

The 2-day Vadodara to Ujjain trip plan

This plan is built on the Avantika's 07:30 arrival and ends with either return train. Ujjain Junction is about 2 km from the Mahakaleshwar temple; autos wait at the station. Temple timings change with the season and festival calendar, so we do not print them — the temple opens before dawn; check the official Shri Mahakaleshwar site for the day's darshan and aarti schedule.

BlockDay 1 (arrive 07:30)Day 2
Early morningArrive Ujjain Junction 07:30; auto or pre-booked car to the hotel; breakfast and a quick washKaal Bhairav Mandir on the edge of town, then Mangalnath on the Shipra
Late morningMahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga darshan (general queue), then walk the Mahakal Lok corridorSandipani Ashram, then back towards the old city
AfternoonLunch and rest; Harsiddhi Temple, a short walk from MahakaleshwarLunch; Vedh Shala (the Jantar Mantar observatory) if time allows; collect bags
EveningRam Ghat on the Shipra River for the evening aarti, dinner in the old cityAvantika option: at Ujjain Junction by 18:30 for the 18:55 train
NightHotel night 1Shanti option: dinner, a last walk past Mahakal Lok, at the station by 23:45 for the 00:20 train

Day 1: Mahakaleshwar, Mahakal Lok, Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat

Do the Jyotirlinga first, while you are fresh and before the midday crowd. Mahakal Lok, the corridor beside the temple, is easiest right after darshan since you are already there. Harsiddhi Temple is within walking distance; save it for after lunch when the heat is off. End at Ram Ghat for the evening aarti on the Shipra — no ticket, no queue. Hotels near the temple are the obvious base for a two-day stay; our sister site hotelsinujjain.in covers that side, so we leave hotel names and rates to it.

Day 2: Kaal Bhairav, Mangalnath, Sandipani, then the train

Day 2 is the outer circuit: Kaal Bhairav Mandir, Mangalnath and Sandipani Ashram are spread around town, so this is the day to hire a car or a fixed-price auto for the morning (route and fare guides are on ujjaintourandtravel.com). If you are taking the 18:55 Avantika, be back at the hotel by 17:00 to collect bags; if you are taking the 00:20 Shanti, you have the evening free and should check out of the hotel by its deadline but leave bags at reception.

Variant: Saturday Shanti out, Monday 06:12 back — no hotel night

Board the 19309 at Chhayapuri at 21:22 on Saturday, arrive Ujjain 03:45 Sunday, do the full Day 1 circuit, then take the 00:20 Shanti on Sunday night and reach Chhayapuri at 06:12 on Monday in time for work. It is a hard 24 hours with two train nights and no bed — fine for fit adults, wrong for children or elders, who should take the two-night version above. Compare it with the similar Friday–Sunday plan in our Ujjain weekend trip from Ahmedabad, which covers the same Friday-night-out, Sunday-night-back pattern from Ahmedabad.

Bus and self-drive from Vadodara (backup options)

Overnight sleeper buses (snapshot, October 2026)

AbhiBus's Baroda–Ujjain page, read on 28 October 2026, listed 34-plus services with fares starting from Rs549, in non-AC, AC, sleeper, AC sleeper and Volvo formats, and quoted a journey of around 8 hours 26 minutes; the first and last departures shown were 00:28 and 23:55, but those vary by day. Boarding points include the Central Bus Station, Chhani Jakatnaka and Golden Chokdi; the Ujjain drop is Nanakheda bus stand, and some services change bus at Indore or Bhopal, so confirm whether yours is direct before paying. Overnight sleepers are the fallback when both trains are waitlisted — treat the duration as roughly 8–9 hours and check the operator.

Driving via Godhra–Dahod–Ratlam: hedged

The road broadly follows the railway through Godhra and Dahod into Madhya Pradesh and then on to Ratlam and Ujjain. We could not verify a single road figure — planners quote anywhere from 281 to 298 km — so plan on roughly 300 km, check a current map, and avoid the Dahod stretch at night. Driving makes most sense for a group that wants to add Omkareshwar on the way back. Flying is not a realistic option from Vadodara; if you ever arrive by air, flytoujjain.com covers that side.

Booking checklist for Vadodara travellers

Travelling from elsewhere in Gujarat? The Surat to Ujjain trip boards the same Avantika at Surat at 00:27, earlier on the same run, and the general 2-day Ujjain itinerary has the temple circuit in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Which train is best from Vadodara to Ujjain?

For most families, the 12961 Avantika Express: it leaves Vadodara Junction at 02:12 and arrives Ujjain at 07:30 daily (as of October 2026), so you do not lose a day. The 19309 Shanti Express is the better departure time (21:22 from Chhayapuri) but arrives at 03:45, before hotel check-in. Confirm both on NTES.

How long does Vadodara to Ujjain take by train?

About five to six and a half hours depending on the train. The Avantika covers Vadodara Junction to Ujjain Junction (358 rail km) in 5 h 18 min; the Shanti takes 6 h 23 min from Chhayapuri. Daytime trains on the aggregator lists take similar times but waste the day.

Is Chhayapuri the same as Vadodara station?

No. Chhayapuri (CYI) is a satellite station about 6 km from Vadodara Junction (BRC), near Chhani Toll Naka, opened in December 2019 to ease congestion at the main station. The Shanti Express and several other trains to Ujjain stop only at Chhayapuri, so check the code on your ticket.

Is there a bus from Vadodara to Ujjain?

Yes. AbhiBus listed 34-plus Baroda–Ujjain services on 28 October 2026 with fares from Rs549 and a journey of roughly 8–9 hours, in sleeper and AC sleeper formats. Some services change bus at Indore or Bhopal and departure times vary by day, so check the operator before booking.

Are 2 days enough for Ujjain from Vadodara?

Yes. Arrive at 07:30 on the Avantika, cover Mahakaleshwar, Mahakal Lok, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat on day 1, the Kaal Bhairav–Mangalnath–Sandipani circuit on day 2, and leave on the 18:55 Avantika (Vadodara 00:30) or the 00:20 Shanti (Chhayapuri 06:12). Add a day only if you want Omkareshwar.
